Engraving Pine

I have been ask to engrave some pine lids.

Can this be done? What sort of setting do I need to use?

Alan

Hi Alan,

Yes you can engrave very nicely onto pine.  Try 800mm/min @ 30% and alter the power if you want a deeper engrave.  Also you will get a much sharper finish if you sand the engraving with 320 sand paper on the engraving. Don’t worry about sanding the image away it wont happen.  Attached is some coasters I did for a Xmas present.  The timber is reclaimed from an old chair (Ikea) but the pine will engrave just as nice.  The finish on the timber is wipe on polyurethane.

Was the wipe on Minwax or home made.

Thanks Alan,

It was Minwax.

I think I will try and make my own as Minwax is very expensive in the UK.

Alan

Really any finish will thin down and become wipe on.

We had a large hardware store chain getting out of selling Minwax and sold it for $5 can. I stocked up.

Oh I’m in Australia.

Cheers

In the UK the best price I can find is 43.27 Aus diollar

We also have a brand called Feast Watson that have a wipe on poly.  Not sure if that’s available in the UK.

However, a can of either brand will last a long long time. I just use a piece of old T shirt material or similar to wipe it on.  Depending on what the project is I  sometimes use shellac or a sander sealer as a base.
